This great genesis gv80 for about six months and I’ve put around 10 000 kilometers on the car so far and we’ve been putting it up in comparison against its chief rivals for the last few months to see whether this Korean luxury brand actually has the chops to take on the establishment and today is probably the hardest round yet because.
Genesis Is The 3-Liter Diesel And I Chose That Engine
We’ve brought along one of the best seven-seat luxury crossovers on the market the Audi q7 now this is only the second generation q7 but it feels like it’s been around forever because it was one of the originators of this well-sized seven-seat luxury suv concept here in Australia now the q7 I’ve brought along here is a bit of a hark back to the original car.
Because under this attractive Navara bluebonnet is a petrol engine a three-liter v6 turbo with a 48-volt system that’s remarkably economical now you’ll remember my genesis is the 3-liter diesel and I chose that engine on purpose because it’s designed to be the most efficient choice but also a brand new diesel engine is a rarity in the year 2021 so of course.
It’s not completely apples for apples you can get a couple of different diesel engine choices in the q7 as well so in today’s video we’re mainly going to be concentrating on the full package we’ll start with a refresher in the genesis then we’ll jump into the cabin of the Audi we’ll compare the practicality and then we’ll take these two SUVs out onto the road to see which is best.
Genesis Is That There’s I Think Five Interior
So you’ll find plenty of gv80 content on the chasing cars but let’s give ourselves a quick refresher on what makes the interior special about this car, first of all, is the lovely color choices I mean I would say that because I chose them but I think the gray over tan speck on this car has come up beautifully plus.
You get this additional color navy blue here on the dash if you go for June beige leather and open port black wood but the nice thing about genesis is that there’s I think five interior color combinations you can choose all at no cost if you go for the luxury package which is a must-have it’s not cheap but it includes this better quality napa diamond-quilted leather suede headlining.
A fully digital instrument cluster active noise cancellation uh electric rear seat controls a whole bunch of stuff that just makes the car feel that much more luxurious we also have heated and cooled front seats with massage for the driver that massage is good because I don’t find these seats quite as supportive in the base as the ones in the Audi so.
I Tended To Use That Stretching Function As Genesis
I tended to use that stretching function as genesis calls it quite often now the rugby ball steering wheel not everyone likes it personally I do because at least it’s something a little bit different plus we have this enormous 14-inch screen up here it is a touch screen but it’s far away so you tend to use this rotary and swipe controller here in the center which is pretty good what’s also excellent is the lexicon by Harman stereo clear in this car unfortunately in the digital gauges you can’t put a map.
There and they’re not especially useful I found over my time with the car but they look pretty in their high resolution and they have eye-tracking 3d which is quite cool you get leather up here on the doors on the dash and it’s practical big cupholders here wireless phone charging usb ports a dual center armrest with lots of storage space and the seating position is a little higher than.
The q7 it’s more of a command driving position more like a land rover or a range rover and that feels good let’s have a look in the back the second row of the gv80 is also a comfortable place to spend time because it’s spacious the view out is excellent and all of the great finishing comes through here too the second row the seats are comfy.
Audi Which Has A Three-Year Unlimited Kilometer
They’re soft you get all those soft materials up on the door as well plus you get handy features like electric adjustment for the seat which includes an adjustable seat base which is very very pleasant the seat also reclines electrically but to give the third row more space you have to use a manual uh lever but it is spring-loaded so.
It even gives you a bit of assistance in that department I would say that out of the two the back seat is a little bit more palatial in the gv80 so you might think well this could be a good chauffeur driven car but unlike Audi which has a three-year unlimited kilometer warranty for commercial use the commercial warranty on the gv80 is five years with 160 000 kilometers and somebody pointed.
That out in the comments to me something I wouldn’t usually think of but if that’s the area you’re in it might be relevant however you should note that if you’re buying the gv80 privately it gets a five-year unlimited kilometer warranty so there you go now we do have air vents back here we’ve got a separate fan zone separate temperature heated and cooled rear seats.
The Luxury Package Plus We Get Electric Sun Blinds
Because I went for the luxury package plus we get electric sun blinds as well in the back to keep the sun off the faces of little ones additionally solid flip-down armrest cup holders there plush carpeting two more usb ports and a 12-volt socket plus controls on the front passenger seat so you can move that from right here in the back so very complete jumping into the cabin of the q7 it’s a little more restrained and conservative but partially.
That’s because this test car has been specified conservatively to start with it has the black pack outside and we have black Nappa leather inside paired to the aluminum trip so it’s quite cold quite Teutonic but you can option q7s with brighter and more interesting interiors if you so choose but it is nice to of course have that choice now the q7 gets.
A lot right inside firstly the ergonomics are great everything falls pretty much right to hand from this charming perforated s-line steering wheel to the new infotainment the virtual cockpit it all feels pretty much where you would expect to find everything now if you’ve been a subscriber you’ll know that I have complained long term about Audi removing.
That Audi Have Put Into Their New Vehicles
The rotary MMI controller from their cars and I still think I’m right about that but what I will say is at least the touchscreens that Audi have put into their new vehicles are responsive crisp high-res bright and the touch targets are very large so it is hard to get it wrong even if a rotary dial would still be preferable now.
We have google maps integration with satellite thanks to this car’s included 4g connection which you get three years of included data for that means you can put a satellite map in front of you which is like a sixth sense compared to driving the gv80 it’s just great to be able to see the road layouts short cuts etc sitting right in front of you.
You can also do nav and media and stuff through this screen here you get wireless carplay which you don’t get on the gv80 and you have a climate control panel down here important to note though that you don’t get seat cooling on the q7 which would make this black interior pretty toasty in summer but today it is genuinely freezing so.
The Seats Under This Armrest
Just having seat heating is all I need right now plus the steering wheel heating just like in the genesis works well in terms of practicality it’s perhaps not quite at the same level the cup holders are a bit more pokey there’s not as much storage in between the seats under this armrest so there is a really good wireless phone charger where your phone stays there and stays charging.
This isn’t a given on cars at the moment and also the secondary materials are not quite the same level as the genesis we have this molded plastic soft plastic dashboard and on the doors, you can option an extended leather package on the q7 which converts that to soft stitch leather that’s something I would do if you’re going to keep the car long term but at this price I think that really should be standard to match a gv80 with the luxury package so upfront I like the q7 I think it’s luxurious but it’s not quite as plush or as out there design wide sign-wisev80 so it kind of comes down to personal taste.
